DON'T CHECK THE BOX Do Not Fund A Memorial That Does Not Honor Those Killed
|
Where is the 9/11 Memorial?
It is 2010. Bill and Agnes, visiting from Milwaukee Wisconsin, step out of the cab and look
around. They see a nice park like area with trees and walkways, people sitting on benches.
They hear the loud sounds of running water, but see no fountains. They follow the path,
anxiously looking for symbols of the day but see nothing. They reach the ledges where the
names are inscribed but cannot discern who the names represent. There is no information, just
a listing of names without meaning. What was the name of the FDNY Chaplain killed? The
Colonel from Morgan Stanley? The child flying home with her parents? The two sisters from
Cantor Fitzgerald? They are confused. When they were asked to donate they saw pictures
of firefighters, the American Flag, candles, crosses and other religious symbols, and many
statements saying "WE WILL NEVER FORGET". They distinctly remember viewing the Flyers
of the Missing, the intimate details each provided. It was through these, they felt, that
Americans truly understood what and who was attacked that day. Where were they now?
Where is the memorial to 9/11? For certain it isn't at the WTC site.
9/11 Families, New Yorkers and all Americans want the history of the attacks faithfully
portrayed at the WTC site. Michael Bloomberg, NYC Mayor and WTC Foundation Chairman
does not.
Bloomberg supports the 13 member Memorial Jury (made up of intellectuals, artists and
government appointees of then NY State George Pataki and Bloomberg, himself) decision that
there can be NO history of 9/11 at the World Trade Center site in order to preserve the
integrity of the Memorial.
Michael Bloomberg wants a six-acre, $500 million memorial devoted solely to grief and
mourning. Bloomberg wants you to pay for a memorial to a tragedy. A memorial that shows
"that everybody is equal". For $500 million it will be a memorial that completely ignores the
courage, sacrifice and compassion that was shown on September 11th.
What's missing at the Bloomberg "made for America" memorial:
Iconic artifacts - the Koenig Sphere and the Tower Facade
An American Flag
Reference to the dates September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993
Any recognition of the belief in salvation or redemption for of the 2,749 souls killed
Discernible listing of who was killed at the WTC site, in Shanksville and at the Pentagon.
The memorial is an un-american tribute to the cultural, political, and moral elitism of
an era that was rendered obsolete on September 11th. The planned WTC 9/11
Memorial is supported by a small group of self-anointed intellectuals, dispassionate
and selfish individuals who represent everything that 9/11 was not. September
11th was passionate, compassionate and heroic--that is what great nations are
made of.
At the Bloomberg memorial it is okay for art to triumphant over history, over the truth and
over the courage and dignity of all the people who died that day. It is okay because "less is
more", "you can't please everyone" and Michael Bloomberg's favorite reason: "it's time to
move on".
December 2006 Announcement:
Adjacencies Without Meaning
Just when you thought the WTC Memorial process couldn't get any more absurd. Michael
Bloomberg, WTC Memorial Foundation Chair's Office, announces that the completely random
listing will be scratched in favor of a listing that groups the names together but provides no
context to let the visitor know why the names are grouped. The exception is that rescue
workers will be grouped together on the South Pool by command, precinct, or company.
Yet, in a bow to political correctness, their ranks will not be included.
According to the WTC Memorial Foundation press release (12/13/06) the Foundation
Executive Board has voted to adopt a concept of "meaningful adjacencies" to list the names
of those killed. In an absurd twist however, the listing will not identify why the adjacencies are
meaningful. While ten groupings are being created, according to the press release only the
rescue workers' groupings' will be identified by affiliation. (See the press release www.
buildthememorial.org)
The newest arrangement groups the names as follows:
North Pool: those who worked in or were visiting the North Tower and those on American
Flight 11.
South Pool: those who worked in or were visiting the South Tower; those who were on United
Flight 175; those killed in the 1993 bombing; those killed when United Flight 93 was crashed in
Shanksville; those killed when American Flight 77 was crashed into the Pentagon; those killed at
the Pentagon; those killed whose location is not known; and the rescue workers.
Michael Bloomberg and George Pataki why?
Bloomberg says it is because "it's time to move forward". Pataki believes this arrangement
allows for quiet meaning.
This is not a move forward and the arrangement's meaning is so quiet that only visitors who
know those killed will grasp the meaning.
New Yorkers and all Americans have said many times over that those killed on
September 11th must be remembered with honor and dignity. We embraced the
first true memorial, the flyer's of the dead. These flyer's told the viewer much more
about the person than their name; they always included the age, occupation, tower,
and floor. People were drawn to these not only because of the pictures, but
because it told the story-who were those killed, what they did, where were they,
and how old they were. We set up our own memorials in New York City and
throughout the nation that consisted of pictures of those killed, descriptions of
those killed, flags, religious symbols and vows "To Never Forget".
We do not want nor do we deserve a memorial that does not honor those killed.
Here are the questions for Michael Bloomberg, NYC Mayor and WTC Foundation
Chair:
Why not Capt. William F. Burke, Jr., Eng. 21?
Why not John S. “Pepe” Salerno, Jr, Cantor Fitzgerald, 104th floor, WTC 1?
The Hanson family, Peter, 32, wife, Kim Sue, 32 and daughter Christine Lee, age 2,
perished together when their plane was slammed into Tower 2 of the WTC. You
want to separate them at the memorial. Why?
Why not identify the children?
We are told we must “compromise” on how the names will be done. Why?
Why do you endorse a memorial that does not acknowledge the attacks?
Why are you telling everybody to contribute money to the memorial because it
says, “Never forget” when the jury picked it precisely because it does not recognize
the attacks - and there cannot be any history of the attacks anywhere on the site
“in order to preserve the integrity of the memorial “ - the jury’s words?
The families, New York, and America endorsed the identifying of people by their
location, tower, floor, employer, and for the rescue workers, dept, company and
rank. Why do you reject it?
Who, specifically, is against it and why?
Why should the entire six acre, $500 million memorial be devoted entirely to
mourning – without any reference to 9/11? Is that the sole purpose of the
memorial? Is that what you believe the thousands have journeyed to the site for?
Misleading Fundraising Campaign
This is the latest fundraising campaign ad. It is a photograph taken by Bob Krist of a
spontaneous memorial that sprang up in the days following 9/11/01. It is a "People's Memorial"
-made with no input from government officials or "cultural experts"-to the heroism and
sacrifice of 9/11. It is beautiful in its sincerity: the sense of patriotism (flags, red, white and blue
ribbons); pride (FDNY, NYPD, Court Officer badges); and salvation and redemption (angels).
Almost none of it will be at the planned Memorial.
The handwritten note at the bottom of the ad states:
"WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOU OR YOUR SACRIFICE FOR NYC."
The American people will never forget; those responsible for the Memorial already have. The
words "hero" and "sacrifice" due to their implications were ruled out of the final draft of the
Memorial Mission Statement. Neither can nor will be expressed at the memorial approved and
supported by George Pataki and Michael Bloomberg.
Why? Because they imply that there is that in this world that is greater than ourselves and
worth risking and giving our lives for such as faith, patriotism and duty. The handful of
intellectuals behind the Memorial do not believe in that, so none of it will be there. 9/11 must be
removed from the WTC site so that they can substitute their beliefs and values.
The fundraising tag line reads: "We needed one then. We need one now."
Is this the Memorial you feel you need and deserve? Is this a memorial you are willing to
financially support?
Or
Do you believe that the memorial should convey the events of the day with the names listed
by affiliation, grouped together as appropriate-rescue workers by company/precinct/unit and
rank; office workers by company, tower; flight crew and passengers by flight and location; and
by date 1993 and 2001.
Do you believe that the Koenig Sphere, facade and other iconic artifacts should be brought
back and placed in a prominent spot at street level to let visitors know that they are at the site
of the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks?
Do you believe that the memorial museum should be at street level, not below?
If yes, please click on Take Action.
Federal tax dollars are being used to partially fund this memorial. George Pataki wants to run
for President, let's not let him think he can do that using his 9/11 WTC Memorial record.
